PRICE HILL / WESTERN HILLS KIWANIS BULLETIN - January 18, 2000

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." - John 14:27

The guests almost outnumbered the hosts today.
There was Deb Hawthorne, Karl and Kay Grome, Kathy and Alex Dannemiller, Officer Rich Manella (hope that's spelled correctly), and others listed below, or who didn't sign the "guest list"...
Bob "Bugsy" Rinear was arrested last Thursday - warrant and all - by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Bigner even got the Delhi Press to take pictures! Bugsy was released with $680.95 bail, which goes to MDA, of course. After Bob's initial plea, the 95 cents was donated by "The Three Wise Guys," whoever they may be.
Glad hand to Bill Stautberg - a pair of handcuffs! (Who do you suppose will be arrested next?)
President Tony announced that he has $5 tickets for the Harrison Kiwanis Valentine's Day raffle. (The drawing is Thurs., Feb 3rd.)
One of the biggest rounds of applause in memory followed the announcement that Dan Kipp left town.
Gary Becker was commissioned the new Marshall by Joyce. To impress Joyce with his ambition, he fined her two dollars for appearing without a red shirt and blue badge.
I saved two dollars by remembering my badge and red sweater, which I believe I'll keep wearing, even though Ostertag made fun of it ("Hey, Dr. Frankenshine, you forgot your neck bolts, but the rest of your costume looks pretty authentic.") God has given me the grace to be able to forgive...
Cliff Franklin is having a stress test. He also has an aneurysm in his right leg. He will also have an angiogram soon. Despite the above, it was said that he is in good spirits - let's keep prayin' for him.
Gene Simpkins has pneumonia, bronchitis, and shingles. Ditto for him!
Guy Langenbrunner has had one knee replacement, and is on his way to another. Maybe afterwards, he'll attend more meetings...(smile, Guy!)
Edgar Willig reported that his son was really "pumped up" this passed Sunday, and delivered an inspirational homily!
Unfortunately, we were told that Jim Cupito may not regain the use of his left side. He has been in Good Sam's since having a seizure on Thursday night. Please send cards instead of visiting, for now. Bob Rinear reminded the club that tomorrow it will be one year since Jim had his first seizure and accident. "God is our fortress and strength, an ever-present help in trouble" - Psalm 46:1.
Gary Becker informed the club that Ivo Gerkin, a Price Hill/Western Hills Kiwanian in times past, is in Three Rivers.
Tim Hornsby's guest, Brian Sweeney (Walt's brother), won split-the-pot!
Both Luthy and Ed Flick celebrated their birthdays. (Ed is either 24, 74, or 94.)
Our 2nd VP, Program Chairman Paul Hogue, introduced Tom Reiring, who stood up. Someone yelled "Stand up, Tom," and he muttered "Wise guy." (One of the "Three Wise Guys?")
Today the club presented the Vocational Guidance awards, which are given annually to students from Western Hills, Elder, Seton, and Mother of Mercy High Schools. These awards are in the form of one of two leadership training seminars - "Hugh O'Brien" (a three-day seminar) and "Operation Youth" (one week at Xavier.) Kevin Kahny functioned as the Mercy rep. Now we know who to see when we need mercy...
According to senior Emily Dannemiller's gracious "Seton Thank-you," O.Y. included group discussions on Embarrassing Moments. Don't we all wish we were there with Reiring, Seitz or Luthy?
Sarah Hegner, a junior at Seton, and a member of a Seton/Elder-based steel drum band, thanked the club for her experience at the "Hugh O'Brien" seminar.
Jenna Dirr (senior at Mercy) was inspired by LADD (Living Arrangements for the Developmentally Disabled) at OY, and had an "awesome experience."
Jim Williams, of Western Hills High, made it clear that he wasn't only there for a brief vacation from classes. He said his leadership abilities were enriched!
Stephen Meyer's "eyes were opened" at "Hugh O'Brien." (He's from Elder, a wrestler, who is tall enough to think seriously about B-ball, or "Hoop," as the local teens call it.)
(Tanisha Elliot - Western Hills - and Brian Dinkelacker - Elder - were unable to attend, due to other commitments.)
Reiring did "Operation Youth" in 1987; ditto Bill Seitz in 1971 and Luthy in 1960. Let's take this quiz together to see how far they have come thanks to O.Y.: a.) Which of these gentleman is running for "State Rep?" b.) Which is a film producer? c.) Which is so talented that he could have starred in his own 1950's-style sitcom - "I Love _____?"
Next week - the speaker will be Jim Scott!
