PRICE HILL / WESTERN HILLS KIWANIS BULLETIN - June 6, 2000

I have been noticing lately how our Kiwanis meetings are getting, how shall I say it, a little mellow and flat. Sounds like a beer gone bad. We need to add some sparkle and spice to our somewhat sedate crowd. The point being, "I need something to write about". I always enjoy the articles in the Westwood Civic Club's newsletter. The ones by the "old timer" that go something like this, "I remember the days when Werk Road was just a mule trail." I'm sorry I don't go back that far, but I remember when the Western-Hills shopping center was nothing but woods. Cheviot was the big shopping hub. Stores like Goldsmiths-Jaquet-Woolworths, Nadlers and the Cheviot Movie Theatre were the "Heart of Cheviot". Rohe Drug Store was on the corner of Glenmore and Harrison. They had the best cheeseburgers and ice cream sodas in town. Places like, The Huddle Hut and Buddy's Grill were the "in places". The juke boxes were alive with the sounds of Elvis and Fats. Come on I know you all can relate. Those were the days.

We have some new patients on our sick list. Ed Willig was in an auto accident and ended up with a facture. I'm not sure if it was a wrist or an ankle. I know it wasn't his voice because he is still the man of the hour at the piano lounge at West Park. He's very popular with the blue haired ladies over seventy. He has been seen "tripping the light fantastic" with a number of lady residents while singing loudly in their ears. After all, they don't mind his singing, they don't hear very well anyway.

Tom Reuter had some bad news after a visit to the Cleveland Clinic. After have some trouble with nose bleeds, Tom was found to have some abnormal tissue in his nose. A decision on what action and treatment to take next has not been decided.

Our sympathy to Gene Simpkins and his family on the passing of his brother.

Brian Sweeney was inducted into the PHWH Kiwanis this week. Be sure to sign his apron and introduce yourself to this very nice young man.

Russ and Kathy Puckett are moving to Columbus in the next week or so. I presume that Russ had an offer he couldn't refuse, job wise. Good luck to you both. We will miss you.

The board meeting will be held on June 14th at West Park. The host and hostess will be the Flicks.

Our guest speaker for the week was Howard Wilkenson. He is a columnist for the Metro section of the Enquirer. He is very interested in our political opinions.

He told us that Ohio and Hamilton County was crucial in the upcoming Presidential election.

Till next time ....... Lois L. Lane
