PRICE HILL / WESTERN HILLS KIWANIS BULLETIN - August 1, 2000

The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him. Psalm 28:7

Hail hail the gangs all here! Attendance was much better due to Tina's phone calls and with that number, you can sprinkle in a few guests; Esther & Sandra Emery Kipp and Don Klemann.

Father Jim Willig, Edgar and his wife Alice are taking the trip of faith to Fatima. Jim is now in a wheel chair. Our good friend Harry Maly is spending his last days at home with family. His condition is very serious. Judy Jennison is improving nicely and hopefully we will see here soon. Dick Mather is looking good. He was passing around some pictures of him on his faithful horse "Smokey the Bandit," what a difference a year makes.

It is definitely time to celebrate on hearing the best news yet. Very soon your weekly luncheons will not be composed of Alpo with a side of Mighty Dog. A new caterer is in our future. I can see it now. Crisp leafy salad, crusty fresh rolls, recognizable entrees. Now is that too much to ask for.

Next Wednesday is the Board Meeting at West Park-August 9th-8:00 P.M.

Walt Luthy led us in song. He's not a Dick Bucher but who is. Hopefully Walt is a keeper.

Our program this week was focused on PHWHK being a service club. This means not only writing checks to charities but being there in body and soul helping our brothers and sisters.

Bob Rinear gave the program over to several of our members who had great ideas on how we can give back to the community on a personal level.

Don Beargman from Oyler school told us of the great need and also the success that the mentoring program had done for the children in that community. Mary O'Dwyer is the co-ordinator of the program. Her number is 871-6556. She has all the answers. She is currently vacationing in Ireland but will return soon.

The mentoring program is very flexible and an individual can donate as little as 1/2-to an hour a week. Each student has his own file and folder with exact directions to follow. This program has been so successful that the school has won an award from the state. On a 4th grade level, improvements have been as good as 4-49% in two years. The benefits are in the eyes of the children you help and the rapport you can develop with these children of God.

Meals on Wheels are still in need of helpers. Mondays & Thursdays are open to anyone willing to help. Volunteers have a one stop location to cover, the Senior Chateau on Warsaw. Call Carol Espelage at 557-2700.

Santa Maria has a program for young fathers 15-26. It's basically a mentoring program to teach accountability and responsibility to these young people. Call H.A. Musser for more info.

H.A. also suggests that a program "Manna From Heaven" which is a combination food pantry made up from different churches etc., in the area need distribution help on Saturdays.

Officer Minnella suggests that the Espy Boys & Girls Club have a mentoring program for after school 3-7 P.M. This program helps the children of the area with homework. The coordinator is Kris Schraderfor more info call her at 471-2142.

East Westwood has a youth program at the Presbyterian church near the blvd. This is for mentoring and teaching computer skills. For more info see Officer Minnella.

Now if that doesn't give you enough to think about, then clear your mind and think of these profound questions:

If a man is standing in the middle of a forest speaking and there is no woman around to hear him . . . . is he still wrong?

If a mute swears, does his mother wash his hands with soap?

If you ate pasta and antipasto would you still be hungry?

That's all folks!!!!!!!!!!

Till next time . . . Lois L. Lane
